November 24th, 2014 by Soap World | No Comments | Filed in The Bold and the Beautiful

Maya (Karla Mosley) is confident of reclaiming Rick (Jacob Young).

Maya Avant is a woman on a mission. She’s hopelessly in love with Rick Forrester, she’s going to get him back and she doesn’t care about destroying his happy marriage to her longtime archenemy Caroline to achieve her goal.

Ignoring her ex-fiancé Carter’s (Lawrence Saint-Victor) taunts about throwing herself at Rick when he obviously can’t stand her, Maya (Karla Mosley) hisses that Caroline won’t be Rick’s wife for much longer, proudly wearing Carter’s stamp that she’s a classless gold-digger.

When Maya suggests that the only way she’d back down was if Caroline was pregnant, Carter orders her to respect wedding vows, something which Maya says she believes in, except when they’re connected to Caroline!

Later, finding Rick alone, Maya denigrates Caroline and, ascertaining that children aren’t on their horizon, blatantly tells Rick that she still loves him. Laughing off Rick’s warning about firing her for sexual harassment, Maya coos that deep down, Rick still loves her too.

When Rick won’t give in to her advances Maya stalks off down the corridor only to spy Ridge and Caroline intimately sharing a special moment.

Grabbing Caroline in private, Maya interrogates her for answers and her eyebrows are raised when Caroline lets slip hints about Ridge bringing forth her design talent. The cryptic conversation only reinforces Maya’s determination to use Ridge and Caroline’s emerging working relationship to her advantage.

Kate Linder celebrates 30 years on Y&R

May 3rd, 2012 by Soap World | No Comments | Filed in The Young and the Restless

WHAT AN HONOUR: Kate Linder recieved a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008. (Photographer: Bob Freeman)

It was anything but a promising beginning for Kate Linder, who was hired for one day, to say one line – “dinner is served” – on The Young and the Restless. But 30- years later, the woman who plays Katherine Chancellor’s loyal maid is still very much a key member of the soap’s cast.

Linder well remembers her first day on set, and meeting Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor) in the show’s make-up room. “I introduced myself and said, ‘I’m playing your maid today’, and Jeanne said, ‘Well it’s about time!’ I’ve loved her from then on!”

But at this early stage on screen, Linder’s character as Mrs. Chancellor’s maid didn’t even have a name, and it wasn’t until Jeanne arbitrarily called her Esther, that the writers started including the name in the scripts.

Linder’s character as Esther Valentine has been one of emotional highs and lows, not only housekeeper, but also confidante to the powerful Chancellor dame. Her character has been perennially unlucky in love with both of her brief marriages being to con-men only after the Chancellor fortune. She and her boss have also been kidnapped twice by fortune-hunters, which has resulted in them replying on one another for moral support.

But amongst all the drama, Esther has experienced a lot of joy. “My favorite storylines was the birth of my [on-screen] daughter, Kate, now referred to as Chloe,” says Linder. “My daughter returned to Genoa City from boarding school and changed her name to Chloe since she did not want others to know that she was the daughter of the maid…[but] she eventually came to embrace it.”

But if you’re Kate Linder, you don’t quit your job as a United Airlines flight attendant for what was suppose to be a one-day, one-line role on The Young and the Restless

To this day, Linder enjoys the best of both worlds – on the air and in the air, and has worked at both jobs simultaneously for the past 30-years.  “Acting is my life,” says Linder.  “It’s what I do for a living and my creative satisfaction.  Flying is what I do to stay grounded as long as I can work it into my schedule.”

The Young and the Restless has afforded me many opportunities that I would never have gotten to do otherwise,” says Linder. “Some of my favorites have been participating in four USO tours, serving as a Governor of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for four years, and being the celebrity spokesperson for The ALS Association for the past seven years.”

“Over the years, I have had the most incredible experiences on and off the show [and] I feel very blessed to be on the top-rated soap opera…” says Linder. “Playing Esther, alongside such amazing actors, has been the thrill of a lifetime, made all the more memorable by the support of such wonderful fans.”

Here’s hoping we see Linder on our screens for many more years to come!

Doppelganger danger!

April 26th, 2012 by Soap World | No Comments | Filed in Days of Our Lives

DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Who is the real Rafe? Even Sami doesn't know.

A vicious brawl ensues when Rafe sets eyes on his evil imposter for the first time on Days of our Lives.

The deceitful scheme perpetrated by the DiMeras, to have Rafe’s doppelganger destroy his marriage with Sami, had been going to plan up until the recent murder of Fay – but things have changed.

Ever since Faux Rafe killed a woman to prevent her from exposing the scam, Stefano and EJ have grown cold on the plan and are now ordering the imposter to leave Salem. As Faux Rafe’s guilt at killing Fay overwhelms him, he leaves town immediately, and despite minor set backs with car troubles, he meets a beautiful woman and they’re soon having sex in his apartment.

Meanwhile, back at the psychiatric ward, the real Rafe has disguised himself as a staff member and manages to escape hospital. However, the break-out is short-lived when he accidentally falls off a cliff!

But the drama doesn’t end here. Although the real Rafe is presumed dead, his imposter faces more obstacles. He bumps into runaways Ciara and Theo and tries sweet-talking the kids into lying about seeing him. He then finds himself coerced into some publicity for their rescue, followed by dramas with Sami who overhears him discussing his one- night stand with Dario.

While the real Rafe is being nursed back to health in the local convent, Faux Rafe manages to complete his assigned task of sabotaging Rafe’s marriage with Sami when he considers stabbing her during a heated argument.

But his victory is short-lived when he realises Sami has taken his credit card bearing his real name, Javier Morales and has gone to the safe house to reminisce about Rafe, so Faux Rafe heads there intent on finishing her off. Meanwhile the real Rafe is also en route to the house.

When Faux Rafe arrives, he is horrified to find Sami with the real Rafe. With both Rafes starting at each other, Sami is confused and in utter shock, even more so when Faux Rafe holds them both at gunpoint. As Faux Rafe shouts that Rafe is the lookalike who wants her dead, Rafe attacks him. The violent brawl results in Sami being knocked out unconscious and one man bleeding on the floor – but who is it?

Wedding chaos

March 22nd, 2012 by Soap World | No Comments | Filed in The Bold and the Beautiful

FORCED TO WAIT: Ridge and Brooke bring a halt to Hope and Liam's wedding.

They created a empire where passion rules – a place where power, money and success are there for the taking, in a city where dreams really come true – or do they? For Hope, her perfect dream will be turned into a horrible nightmare on upcoming episodes of  The Bold and the Beautiful.

Now that Hope and Liam have reconciled, Hope wants to make sure their relationship lasts this time, so she suggests to Liam they get married as soon as possible. He agrees that once his divorce from Steffy is finalised in six months, they will be free to go through with Hope’s wedding dreams. But why wait that long?

When Hope urges Liam to obtain an annulment from Steffy, Liam is slightly hesitant, but proceeds with Hope’s requests. But Steffy refuses to let go of her hubby without a fight! She declares that she is not going to sign the documents, and opts to get a normal divorce in six months like he initially asked for.

Hope does not take well to the news, and barges into Steffy’s office demanding she sign the papers. But as expected, Steffy isn’t budging, and either is that wedding ring on her finger! Hope vows that she and Liam will be husband and wife by tomorrow and storms out.

To prove a point, Hope organises a last-minute press conference declaring that her and Liam are back together and will be exchanging vows tomorrow. But with Steffy refusing to sign the papers, a nervous Liam doesn’t know what to do.

The next day, Hope is preparing for an intimate ceremony in her mother’s living room, but when Hope and Liam join at the altar, Ridge suddenly interrupts the minister and informs the bride that Steffy will not sign the annulment papers, meaning the wedding cannot proceed.

Will Hope and Liam’s relationship be able to survive Steffy’s wicked ways?

Who killed Diane?

March 15th, 2012 by Soap World | No Comments | Filed in The Young and the Restless

WHODUNIT: Diane certainly had more than her fair share of enemies, but who killed her? (Source: Heaven Hollywood)

When Diane finally takes revenge on her enemies in The Young and the Restless, including having Victor arrested for domestic abuse, things don’t turn out well for her. Karma strikes, and she is found murdered and floating face-down in the park pond.

As the police investigation begins, Adam, Ashley, Abby, Nick, Victor, Nikki, Phyllis, Tucker and Jack all behave in an uncanny manner and frantically scramble to hide evidence that may link them to the crime. But with so many suspects, who killed her?

Adam definitely has a motive seek revenge after Diane double-crossed him, and dobbed him in to the Securities and Exchange Commission. But Ashley appears to be equally suspicious and her motive is straightforward: she discovers that her husband, Tucker, cheated on her with Diane. But on top of that,  Diane also leaked a tape to the press of Ashley’s daughter, Abby, confessing to Tucker’s attempted murder. All three suspects hold reasons for an act of revenge- who knows what they’re capable of.

Next on the list of suspects is Nick, who had previously been romantically involved with Diane. Infuriated with Diane’s treatment of his family and her threatening behaviours, he has a massive confrontation with her. His phone falls to the ground and the impact of the fall dials Ashley’s number and leaves a voicemail message of Nick threatening to kill Diane. Did Nick really follow through with his verbal threats?

With Diane trying to destroy Victor’s entire family, he definitely has plenty of reasons to want her dead. He was also stopped trying to fly out of Genoa City the night of her murder – was he trying to flee the scene? Nikki also comes under suspicion and has plenty of motive to seek revenge after Diane leaked photos to the tabloid press of Victor and Nikki in a moment of passion. Could this have been enough to push Nikki over the edge?

Phyllis, Tucker and Jack are also plausible suspects. Phyllis has never been a fan of Diane, so when an acrylic nail is found at the crime scene and Phyllis books in for a manicure the next day, evidence speaks loud and clear. Tucker claims to have been at home at the time of Diane’s murder, but we know this isn’t the case. And when Jack discovered Diane had sent their son Kyle to Switzerland without telling him, he was fuming. But could Jack really kill the mother of his child?

With so many suspects, who do you think killed Diane?

THE WORLD OF SOAP… with Rebecca Lake

December 10th, 2010 by Soap World | 1 Comment | Filed in The Bold and the Beautiful

Here It Goes, Here It Goes, Here It Goes Again!

Remember 1990?

The hair was bigger, the clothes were smaller and Sinead O’Connor was beseeching the world to believe that nothing compaaaaared to us.

Having debuted three years earlier, B&B was already a hit with daytime audiences. But, little did anyone know that a new character was about to arrive on the scene – a character that would irrevocably change the face of the show, and spark heated debates between viewers the world around.

I’m talking, of course, about Taylor Hayes Forrester Rashid Forrester Marone Forrester Jones III. From the day she swanned into Los Angeles wearing a crisp white lab coat and a perpetually winsome expression, the good doc set into motion the beginnings of B&B’s most enduring love triangle between her, designer man Ridge Forrester, and everyone’s favourite “slut from the valley”, Brooke Logan.

Whether you wanted Ridge to pick the blonde or the brunette babe (or, if you were like me and hoped that they would each ditch the philandering playboy, join forces and resources and start their own fabulous fashion business while he wallowed in pity and tried to figure out how to tie his own shoelaces without a woman to help him), there was no denying the fascination that their ever-shifting connection held for the watching world.

After two decades and a whole lotta marriages between the threesome, it seemed as if B&B was finally moving away from what was becoming an increasingly tired love triangle when Brooke and Ridge renewed their vows, and Taylor found love with PR star, Whip Jones. But, to paraphrase Michael Corleone in The Godfather, just when we thought we were out of this hot mess, they pull us right back in again. That’s right – B&B has ominously hinted at the reinvigoration of Brooke/Ridge/Taylor in an upcoming storyline that sees Taylor starting to pine for her ex-husband after he makes a throw away comment about returning to her if Brooke strays from him again. Ick. Gag.

Not only do I want to reach into the TV, give Taylor a good shake and tell her to show some respect for herself, I want to phone B&B’s head honchos and tell them to have some respect for us, the viewers who deserve a better class of storyline after sticking with them for twenty-odd years.

What do you think? Would you like to see Taylor, Ridge and Brooke hop back on the carousel of love, lust and lies? Post your comments below, or send them to:
