Marriage Wrecker

November 24th, 2014 by Soap World | No Comments | Filed in The Bold and the Beautiful

Maya (Karla Mosley) is confident of reclaiming Rick (Jacob Young).

Maya Avant is a woman on a mission. She’s hopelessly in love with Rick Forrester, she’s going to get him back and she doesn’t care about destroying his happy marriage to her longtime archenemy Caroline to achieve her goal.

Ignoring her ex-fiancé Carter’s (Lawrence Saint-Victor) taunts about throwing herself at Rick when he obviously can’t stand her, Maya (Karla Mosley) hisses that Caroline won’t be Rick’s wife for much longer, proudly wearing Carter’s stamp that she’s a classless gold-digger.

When Maya suggests that the only way she’d back down was if Caroline was pregnant, Carter orders her to respect wedding vows, something which Maya says she believes in, except when they’re connected to Caroline!

Later, finding Rick alone, Maya denigrates Caroline and, ascertaining that children aren’t on their horizon, blatantly tells Rick that she still loves him. Laughing off Rick’s warning about firing her for sexual harassment, Maya coos that deep down, Rick still loves her too.

When Rick won’t give in to her advances Maya stalks off down the corridor only to spy Ridge and Caroline intimately sharing a special moment.

Grabbing Caroline in private, Maya interrogates her for answers and her eyebrows are raised when Caroline lets slip hints about Ridge bringing forth her design talent. The cryptic conversation only reinforces Maya’s determination to use Ridge and Caroline’s emerging working relationship to her advantage.

Wedding chaos

March 22nd, 2012 by Soap World | No Comments | Filed in The Bold and the Beautiful

FORCED TO WAIT: Ridge and Brooke bring a halt to Hope and Liam's wedding.

They created a empire where passion rules – a place where power, money and success are there for the taking, in a city where dreams really come true – or do they? For Hope, her perfect dream will be turned into a horrible nightmare on upcoming episodes of  The Bold and the Beautiful.

Now that Hope and Liam have reconciled, Hope wants to make sure their relationship lasts this time, so she suggests to Liam they get married as soon as possible. He agrees that once his divorce from Steffy is finalised in six months, they will be free to go through with Hope’s wedding dreams. But why wait that long?

When Hope urges Liam to obtain an annulment from Steffy, Liam is slightly hesitant, but proceeds with Hope’s requests. But Steffy refuses to let go of her hubby without a fight! She declares that she is not going to sign the documents, and opts to get a normal divorce in six months like he initially asked for.

Hope does not take well to the news, and barges into Steffy’s office demanding she sign the papers. But as expected, Steffy isn’t budging, and either is that wedding ring on her finger! Hope vows that she and Liam will be husband and wife by tomorrow and storms out.

To prove a point, Hope organises a last-minute press conference declaring that her and Liam are back together and will be exchanging vows tomorrow. But with Steffy refusing to sign the papers, a nervous Liam doesn’t know what to do.

The next day, Hope is preparing for an intimate ceremony in her mother’s living room, but when Hope and Liam join at the altar, Ridge suddenly interrupts the minister and informs the bride that Steffy will not sign the annulment papers, meaning the wedding cannot proceed.

Will Hope and Liam’s relationship be able to survive Steffy’s wicked ways?

THE WORLD OF SOAP… with Rebecca Lake

Here It Goes, Here It Goes, Here It Goes Again!

Remember 1990?

The hair was bigger, the clothes were smaller and Sinead O’Connor was beseeching the world to believe that nothing compaaaaared to us.

Having debuted three years earlier, B&B was already a hit with daytime audiences. But, little did anyone know that a new character was about to arrive on the scene – a character that would irrevocably change the face of the show, and spark heated debates between viewers the world around.

I’m talking, of course, about Taylor Hayes Forrester Rashid Forrester Marone Forrester Jones III. From the day she swanned into Los Angeles wearing a crisp white lab coat and a perpetually winsome expression, the good doc set into motion the beginnings of B&B’s most enduring love triangle between her, designer man Ridge Forrester, and everyone’s favourite “slut from the valley”, Brooke Logan.

Whether you wanted Ridge to pick the blonde or the brunette babe (or, if you were like me and hoped that they would each ditch the philandering playboy, join forces and resources and start their own fabulous fashion business while he wallowed in pity and tried to figure out how to tie his own shoelaces without a woman to help him), there was no denying the fascination that their ever-shifting connection held for the watching world.

After two decades and a whole lotta marriages between the threesome, it seemed as if B&B was finally moving away from what was becoming an increasingly tired love triangle when Brooke and Ridge renewed their vows, and Taylor found love with PR star, Whip Jones. But, to paraphrase Michael Corleone in The Godfather, just when we thought we were out of this hot mess, they pull us right back in again. That’s right – B&B has ominously hinted at the reinvigoration of Brooke/Ridge/Taylor in an upcoming storyline that sees Taylor starting to pine for her ex-husband after he makes a throw away comment about returning to her if Brooke strays from him again. Ick. Gag.

Not only do I want to reach into the TV, give Taylor a good shake and tell her to show some respect for herself, I want to phone B&B’s head honchos and tell them to have some respect for us, the viewers who deserve a better class of storyline after sticking with them for twenty-odd years.

What do you think? Would you like to see Taylor, Ridge and Brooke hop back on the carousel of love, lust and lies? Post your comments below, or send them to:

Me And My Pal Bridget

I grew up with B&B‘s Bridget Forrester. Not literally, of course – while she was living in her Beverly Hills mansion surrounded by the bold and the batty, I was falling off my bike and listening to The Spice Girls in Sydney. Plus – she’s fictional, where as by most accounts, I am real. Honest!

When Bridget was born, though, I was six years old, and like Brooke Logan, I had spent many months eagerly anticipating her arrival. From the moment that Ridge placed Bridget in Brooke’s arms after delivering her at the Big Bear cabin, I felt a kinship with this girl from a far-off land.

Thanks to the miracle of rapid aging, Bridget and I were soon the same age, and I marvelled at how exciting her life was compared to mine (because, to a soap-crazed six-year old, nothing says “excitement” like a paternity scandal and a kidnapping scare).

Although I continued to age at a normal rate, while Bridget suddenly turned eighteen mere weeks after her eleventh birthday, I was still fascinated by her frequently harrowing escapades. Over the space of a few years, Bridget grew up, attended medical school, found a husband, lost that husband to her mother, found another husband, lost that husband to her mother, became pregnant, gave birth to a stillborn child, entered the world of fashion design, and gave birth to her father-in-law’s baby, which pretty much takes us up to the present day.

Having invested so many hours in Bridget Forrester, it makes me sad to see that Ashley Jones (who has been my favourite of the nine Bridgets to grace the screen since 1992) has been taken off contract and dropped down to recurring status – the same fate that befell Winsor Harmon (Thorne) earlier this year.

While I understand that B&B wants to highlight previously underused players, or bring in new characters (as Ashley became a recurring player, newbie Kristolyn Lloyd (Dayzee) was signed to a permanent contract) I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness for more old TV gal pal, who I still feel has plenty of tragedy – and hopefully a little joy – left to give her fans.

Sayonara, Stephanie Forrester?

If any of you have been checking up on your soap gossip online over the last week, you will probably have stumbled across the rumour that the great Susan Flannery – aka, Stephanie “don’t mess with my family or I’ll run you over with a herd of stampeding elephants” Forrester is gearing up to leave The Bold and the Beautiful.

The source of this rumour was US TV Guide’s Michael Logan, who recently sat down with B&B show-runner Bradley Bell to discuss Stephanie’s upcoming controversial cancer storyline, only to score a scoop when Bell revealed that there is a “possibility” that the marauding matriarch will not survive her disease! (For the full article, click here:

Before we start sticking pins in voodoo dolls of Bradley Bell (for contemplating killing off Stephanie) and Michael Logan (for revealing that Bradley Bell is contemplating killing off Stephanie), let’s pause and think of the bigger picture here, and that is a B&B without Stephanie Forrester.

Can you even imagine it? It’s like picturing a sky without a sun, or the cast of Home and Away without their radioactive fake tans – it’s just a completely alien concept. If Stephanie leaves B&B – who will keep Eric’s eye from wandering? Who will remind Brooke of her past sexcapades? Who will give Ridge a spine?

Aside from the loss of a fantastic character and actor, the biggest problem with Susan Flannery’s possible retirement is that the show itself really isn’t ready for Stephanie to leave.

Every soap opera is built around a matriarchal character that is there to metaphorically (and occasionally physically, if everyone is being really naughty) whip their kids, grandkids, maids, dogs and dining room furniture into line. On most soaps, there are back-up matriarchs, for whenever the primary matriarch is unable to fulfil her butt-kicking duties (like Days’ Maggie, Kate and Caroline or Y&R’s Nikki and Phyllis).

B&B, however, have not been grooming any of the their other leading female characters to step into the alpha role, once Stephanie has vacated it. It’s long been established that Brooke is a flake, Taylor is weak, and Felicia is… non-existent. The only character who could potentially step into Stephanie’s enormous shoes is her namesake, Steffy, but she is too busy pointlessly chasing Hope’s boyfriends to undertake the task of being a rallying-point for her family.

While we would like to think that Bell’s pronouncement is a way of scaring up ratings as the show moves into its November sweeps period, there’s no escaping that although Stephanie (and the rest of her soapy companions) is never a day over 45 on B&B, her portrayer is now 71 years old, and has made no secret of her desire to retire.

We can only hope that either a) Susan Flannery decides to remain with B&B until she’s 125, or b) Brad Bell finds some way to clone Susan Flannery so that she stays with the show forever, as a B&B without Stephanie would be a very dark (and very quiet) place indeed.

What are your thoughts on the (possible) end of Stephanie Forrester’s reign? Send your comments to:

Who's missing from this picture?

Welcome to Soap World’s THE WORLD OF SOAP blog where no botox injection goes unnoticed and no case of Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome goes unpunished!

The goal of this blog is to look at the crazy, fun stories from daytime TV that we all know and love, and ask the REALLY important questions about them, like – why does B&B’s Brooke seem incapable of keeping her hands off her daughters’ boyfriends, or will Days of Our Lives’ Chloe Lane ever have more than one facial expression?!

In this instalment, we look at… The Missing Children of B&B

There must be some kind of Pied Piper on the loose in Soap Land, scooping up the under-ten set and spiriting them away to a mysterious day care centre from which they never seem to return – that is, until the storyline dictates that one of the adult characters needs to show a little parental care, and the littlies are wheeled out for twenty minutes to play quietly while the grownups get on with their real lives in the foreground.

The Bold and the Beautiful is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to disappearing daytime darlings (or DDD’s, as we shall call them.) When was the last time anyone saw RJ Forrester? Or Thorne’s daughter Alexandria? Or baby Jack Marone? This last is the most disturbing of all the DDD’s – with Jack’s sailor papa, Nick Marone, currently boozing it on the Shady Marlin with the shady Aggie, poor little Jack could be stuck under a lobster trap somewhere on board and no-one would ever know!

We know that the kids of Los Angeles can’t always be active participants in the drama and deception swirling around them – and nor would we want them to be, as that would land in Taylor’s psych practice before the age of ten – but it would be nice if we could see them more than twice a year, AND if we could get some sense of who they are before they inevitably succumb to the virulent rapid aging syndrome that has claimed so many of daytime’s kids.

What do you think? Do you want to see more of B&B’s DDD’s? Send your comments to:
